Our son Michael Allen III (A.K.A. "Tripp") got here last night. We went into labour Tuesday night around 8ish, he at least waited until American Idol was over with :) Mel was in labour for almost 24 hours and ended up having a c-section after pushing for 30 minutes with no progress. But he arrived at 6:39PM CST and is just beautiful.

Both Melissa and I are very tired and are very proud of our boy! He's already the ladies man as all of the nurses are just falling over for him. Wait until he get's older, he's gonna be a heartbreaker. I'd try and get her out and go do something, but our street looks like the luge track. It's just a huge downhill sheet of ice. Pray for me. Red rum! Red rum!!!

So i'm up for a bit of a change to the old Prime Mover design, I think that the "fish" is a great look, but it's just not as practical as it should be. I'd like to add a few features that aren't a "disembodied" xbox live tracker that I will never use. Especially since my wife has all but forbidden me to get a next-gen gaming system until the baby turns 16 - sucks to grow up, no?

I'd like to know your thoughts on a redesign though. I'd really like to get my readership up and am thinking about some cool, non LRB.com, features. Sorry, LT, no "hot-computer chicks" drinking in the snow. Hmmm, maybe that's not so bad an idea after all - I'll take over the social blog scene in Little Rock...with complete sentences. MWAAAA-HA-HA-HA!

Speaking of babes, we've decided to go with a jungle theme for "Mikey the Third" and are starting the nursery as soon as the ice storm melts off. Found some cool stuff online, should be uber sweet when we're done too. We got to Montego Bay on the tuesday after Christmas about 9PM and took a bus to Ocho Rios. A 2 hour bus ride across the worst pot-holed rocky road I have ever been on (yes, worse than the old River Road in New Orleans). About 45 minutes in, the bus broke down. So here we are in bum-f**k Jamaica at 10:30 at night at some crazy island rest stop waiting for the next bus to come through. Luckily we had some beers and the second bus was there in no time. We get to the resort at about 11PM local time and crashed. We awoke to this...

How sweet is that? That pic is from our balcony. Über Cool.

The resort was beautiful, the beaches were white and pristine, and the water was the bluest that I have ever seen. We met people from all over the world there, some really cool folks from Montreal, I met a guy from England who is an Ultimate Fighting Championship promoter, and played some sand soccer with some Frenchmen and a few Japanese guys. We took a day and went deep sea fishing (got skunked, but it was much fun), took a day and went snorkling on the same coral reef that Dr. No was filmed. We got to see the Jamaican Prime Minister one evening, he came to eat at the resort and I got to be about 15 feet away from him at one point. You ever see the movie "Event Horizon"? This is the same thing that they based the movie's "hyperspace" drives on. It'd be cool as hades if it worked. Allthough, like the movie, i'm a bit unrasy about the whole "slipping into another dimension" thing - we can't even handle our own yet...

Welcome to Mars: only a three hour trip
An extrodinary "hyperspace" engine that could make interstellar space travel a reality by flying into other dimensions is being investigated by the United States government.

The hypothetical device, which has been outlined in principle but is based on a controversial theory about the fabric of the universe, could potentially allow a spacecraft to travel to Mars in three hours and journey to a star 11 light years away in just 80 days, according to a report in today's New Scientist magazine.

The theoretical engine works by creating an intense magnetic field that, according to ideas first developed by the late scientist Burkhard Heim in the 1950s, would produce a gravitational field and result in thrust for a spacecraft.

Also, if a large enough magnetic field was created, the craft would slip into a different dimension, where the speed of light is faster, allowing incredible speeds to be reached. Switching off the magnetic field would result in the engine reappearing in our current dimension....

too busy for you suckas

So i decided to take a month off. After watching it again on the website, it looks to be done properly. It has the same voiceover from the Godfather himself, Marlon Brando, that was used for Jor-El (Supe's Kryptonian dad) in the original movie. Same music too, which made me warm and fuzzy. The only hokey thing that I could tell is that Louis Lane has a kid. That's kind of retarded if you ask me. Why do that to the storyline? Anyway, Lex Luther is played by Kevin Spacey, and Louis is played by Kate Bosworth so it's got the star power.

Be sure to check it out this Memorial Day 2006...

Kick Ass looking 2006 Winter olympics medals

Here's a look at the new Olympic medals for the Turino games this coming February...yep that's right, already the Olympics again. Some 1,026 medals will be made for the Olympics, plus 648 Paralympics medals and 35,000 commemorative medals. I just found out that one of my good friends from high school was arrested yesterday for allegedly murdering his wife in Massachusetts last September.

James Keown, I would venture to say, was one of my close buddies for the 4 years I attended Jefferson City High School. He was one of those guys that you would never really worry about as you knew he was on the right track.

He obviously wasn't.

He poisoned his wife. Spiked her Gatorade with flipping ANTIFREEZE for a measly $250,000 life insurance policy. The Boston Herald is reporting that he alledgedly lied about school at Harvard, sucked the couples savings dry and slowly killed Julie over time.

I knew Julie, I had just recently seen both of them at our 10 year reunion a few years ago. She was a good person.

I'm stunned. Seems like a scientist has figured out how to make a new variant of the simple Hydrogen molecule. Think back to high school for a second with me, remember that hydrogen is the simplest of atoms as it has only 1 electron moving around it's nucleus. Conventional science says that the distance between the electon's orbit and the nucleus has to be the same everywhere. This new research suggests that he can manipulate the electron closer to the nucleus, therefore when the atom is split, it creates 1000 times more energy and the waste matter created is water.

Now, if you undserstand that, you also understand that this is a cheap alternative fuel that will take dependency off of petrol based energy and transit. This would be huge. Let's all hope that he's right.

...What has much of the physics world up in arms is Dr Mills's claim that he has produced a new form of hydrogen, the simplest of all the atoms, with just a single proton circled by one electron. In his "hydrino", the electron sits a little closer to the proton than normal, and the formation of the new atoms from traditional hydrogen releases huge amounts of energy.

This is scientific heresy. According to quantum mechanics, electrons can only exist in an atom in strictly defined orbits, and the shortest distance allowed between the proton and electron in hydrogen is fixed. The two particles are simply not allowed to get any closer.

According to Dr Mills, there can be only one explanation: quantum mechanics must be wrong. "We've done a lot of testing. We've got 50 independent validation reports, we've got 65 peer-reviewed journal articles," he said. "We ran into this theoretical resistance and there are some vested interests here. People are very strong and fervent protectors of this [quantum] theory that they use."...

Heeeeeeeeere's Johnny!

Wow. It's been a while since my last post. But be assured that now I'm back from the land of work stress for a brief while and plan on making some impact on the blogosphere again.

Let's recap the last two weeks shall we? I'll give the abridged version for all of you kids today...

If you have never been to Athens, Georgia, you are really missing one of the South's most relaxing and beautiful cities. Home of the University of Georgia, and my brother-in-law, we drove the miserable 10 hours between Little Rock and Athens twice in a 3 day period to attend the 2005 UGA Homecoming football game against the Razorbacks. It was a weekend that I will not soon forget, my body is still thinks it has alcohol poisoning 2 weeks later...Fun as hell and the Hogs almost pulled off the upset on the #4 Bulldogs. All I have to say to that is GEAUX TIGERS ;)

We got back from the trip and made our way to the Baby doctor on Tuesday, all is well with our pregnancy and we got to hear the baby's heartbeat for the first time - let me tell you, if you have never experienced that, it's one of the few moments in my life that I can actually define as amazing and life changing...

Back to work, over the remainder of the last 2 weeks, I have cranked out 4 new website designs (4 HUGE designs too). My brain feels like creative afterbirth. Kicker is I still have 2 more to do this week, how I'm going to pull that one off - I dunno...?

To the home front - Grass. No, not the kind you smoke, the kind you plant. In my supreme wisdom, I planted the wrong kind of grass seed earlier this year. After the 100 degree days of late summer, our yard looked like a desert. Just so you know Rye grass FRIES, no erupts into flame, in the Arkansas sun. Saturday, I spent the afternoon raking up the old stuff, putting new sod down and overseeding Bermuda.

OK, now you're caught up. I'll have more soon...

Saints & Sinner

I'm going to stick with the sports theme here, seems to be a good one this week...

I really used to like Tom Benson. He seemed to be really proud to be a New Orleanian, and part of the Saints franchise. Seems like that may have just been part of his umbrella pumping, bead throwing sideline act though, as it seems he is trying to move the Saints to San Antonio permanently.

Some days I tend to get a bit down on my fellow man, especially when it's someone I used to respect, and today I am down on Benson. That city, as broken as it is right now, needs that team. It is the only thing that most of those people have to hold onto anymore. Shame on him for selling out to the almighty dollar. I just am very dissapointed. Sometimes it's more than just the money, it's integrity.

Mayor Nagin blasts Saints owner for trying to move team

NEW ORLEANS -- Mayor Ray Nagin disparaged Saints owner Tom Benson on Wednesday for working with San Antonio officials to permanently keep the NFL team in Texas.

The mayor's comments came after the departures of two top Saints executives who were supportive of keeping the Saints in Louisiana. Nagin is concerned that San Antonio officials said publicly that Benson is working with them to relocate the franchise to Texas.

"We want our Saints, we may not want the owner back," Nagin said while attending the reopening of Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter.

"I'm ready to go to the NFL and to [commissioner Paul] Tagliabue and say, 'Give us the Cleveland plan,'" Nagin added, referring to the league awarding Cleveland an expansion team almost immediately after the Browns moved to Baltimore after the 1995 season. "Whatever the Saints want to do, you let them leave, but they can't take our logo, they can't take our name, and you give us a promise to give us a franchise when this city's back."

A Saints spokesman did not return a telephone call and e-mail seeking a response to Nagin's comments.

"For them to be openly talking to other cities about moving is disrespectful to the citizens of New Orleans, disrespectful to the Saints fans who have hung in with this franchise through 30-something years under very trying times," Nagin said.

The Saints joined the NFL in 1967. In 1986, Benson was part of an ownership group that bought the team to ensure it would stay in Louisiana. Benson eventually bought out other members of the group.

During Benson's ownership, the state of Louisiana has built him a new headquarters, including spending $6.75 million for an indoor practice field in 2003. The state also has paid for repeated improvements to the Louisiana Superdome at Benson's insistence during the past two decades.

On Monday night, Benson fired Arnold Fielkow, the team's top business executive since 2000. Fielkow had overseen a 36-game sellout streak at the Superdome and negotiated an unprecedented stadium lease that called for the state to pay Benson $187 million in direct subsidies over 10 years.

But Fielkow has said he believed the Saints needed to be leaders in New Orleans' rebuilding process after Hurricane Katrina and repeatedly praised Saints fans in Louisiana as the best and most loyal in the NFL. Fielkow has since said that stance led to his dismissal.

On Tuesday, Conrad Kowal, senior director of marketing and business development, also resigned.

Nagin called Benson's recent actions a "doggone shame."

Signs of the apocalypse

I know, I know, but it's kind of funny...

GO CARDINALS!

http://www.stltoday.com/sports/

I owe a post

I've been mucho-busy the last week or so, but I promise i'll have some new stuff up soon. 'But he couldn't get them up without help.'

One woman had a large lump on her head and appeared to be unconscious, he said. When she came to, the first thing she said was: 'Are you Nomar?' Victor Garciaparra said.

The two men pulled the women from the water. Their husbands arrived and whisked them off to the hospital before the Garciaparras even got their names, he said.

Johnny O'Hara of Natick witnessed the incident from his boat.

"A bunch of us came running over and sure enough, pulling the two girls from the water was Nomar," he told the newspaper. When I get these little links I always like to track back to the site's root directory - that means that I delete the URL back to the .com or .net and see what the main site is...

In this case it's http://keithschofield.com/. Nike has developed a special gold and white version of the shoes Ronaldinho normally wears. It will feature real 24-carat gold applied to the Nike logo.

Previously, Michael Johnson wore a gold track spike in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova wore tennis shoes laced with gold at Wimbledon this year.

The boots feature a gold tongue with an 'R' embroidered in silver color on the right boot -- inspired by the necklace Ronaldinho wears -- and an embroidered No. 10 on the left. The heel is embossed with five gold stars to honor Brazil's five World Cup wins, and the boot also includes a laser-patterned sock liner with the word 'Ronaldinho' on it.

"I can't wait to wear the gold boots against Zaragoza," he said. "We were wondering how to give the boot a personal touch, so they copied the design of my neck chain to reproduce the 'R' and added my number 10. I got the joy of taking part in the design, so they are all mine and personalized."

"baaaaaby rrruuuuf"

This is the stupidist thing that I have ever blogged about. No really, BY FAR! I don't even know how it was broached, but my work "cell mates" and I were cutting up a bit earlier, and I happend to have an unopened Snickers bar on my desk. Anthony, picked it up and said, "230 calories in that thing, wow."

It is at this point that I spouted out, "230 calories in that turd?" Which leads to "I wonder how many calories are in a real turd" and our old friend google.com.

You would not believe the funny stuff that comes up when you search for 'how many calories in a turd'. So a turd the size of a typical Baby Ruth candy bar (see caddy shack movie) is about 250 calories ."

Well, we found our answer AND as an added bonus we found a great web site. We have arrived on your doorstep on short notice and we apologize for that, but we never were much for waiting around for invitations. We're not much on formalities like that.

And we might be staying around your town for a while, enrolling in your schools and looking for jobs, so we wanted to tell you a few things about us. We know you didn't ask for this and neither did we, so we're just going to have to make the best of it.

First of all, we thank you. For your money, your water, your food, your prayers, your boats and buses and the men and women of your National Guards, fire departments, hospitals and everyone else who has come to our rescue.

We're a fiercely proud and independent people, and we don't cotton much to outside interference, but we're not ashamed to accept help when we need it. And right now, we need it.

Just don't get carried away. For instance, once we get around to fishing again, don't try to tell us what kind of lures work best in your waters.

We're not going to listen. We're stubborn that way.

You probably already know that we talk funny and listen to strange music and eat things you'd probably hire an exterminator to get out of your yard.

We dance even if there's no radio. We drink at funerals. We talk too much and laugh too loud and live too large and, frankly, we're suspicious of others who don't.

But we'll try not to judge you while we're in your town.

Everybody loves their home, we know that. But we love South Louisiana with a ferocity that borders on the pathological. Sometimes we bury our dead in LSU sweatshirts.

Often we don't make sense. You may wonder why, for instance - if we could only carry one small bag of belongings with us on our journey to your state - why in God's name did we bring a pair of shrimp boots? We can't really explain that. It is what it is.

You've probably heard that many of us stayed behind. As bad as it is, many of us cannot fathom a life outside of our border, out in that place we call Elsewhere.

The only way you could understand that is if you have been there, and so many of you have. So you realize that when you strip away all the craziness and bars and parades and music and architecture and all that hooey, really, the best thing about where we come from is us.

We are what made this place a national treasure. We're good people. And don't be afraid to ask us how to pronounce our names. It happens all the time.

When you meet us now and you look into our eyes, you will see the saddest story ever told. Our hearts are broken into a thousand pieces. But don't pity us. We're gonna make it. We're resilient. After all, we've been rooting for the Saints for 35 years. That's got to count for something.

OK, maybe something else you should know is that we make jokes at inappropriate times.

But what the hell.

And one more thing: In our part of the country, we're used to having visitors. It's our way of life.

So when all this is over and we move back home, we will repay to you the hospitality and generosity of spirit you offer to us in this season of our despair.

That is our promise. I remember my home as it used to be and wonder if it will ever capture the radiance that was New Orleans again. I choose to think that it will. The great Tenessee Williams once said that there are only three great cities in America, New York, San Francisco and New Orleans. My fellow New Orleneans are a strong people, and more importantly a stubborn people. It is that latter that will overcome this unruly hand and build our so dubbed "New" New Orleans. Although the residential parts of St. Bernard, Jefferson and Orleans Parishes are for all intensive purposes going to be bulldozed and rebuilt, our history still is there: The French Quarter, Lee Circle, Most of the Garden District, Loyola, Tulane, Audubon Park, and the Audubon Zoo among others.

For some reason, when this first hit, one of my first anxieties was of the Zoo. It is hands down one of my favorite places on the planet. To be more specific my exact spot is in the nooks of the historic Oak tree that has worked it's way in and out of the earth. If anyone has ever been there, you will know instantly what I mean. This is one of the first places that I remember as a child. As I have grown into adulthood, my return visits home have always brought me back to this spot. Now it has become more than a favorite spot, it has become a symbol to me. Because you see, that tree is now the people of New Orleans, our roots are deep, and we are so interwoven with our "spot" we will never give it up.

Oh yes my friends, New Orleans will be great again, we won't allow it not to be...

devastation and disbelief

New Orleans. My birth home. My heritage. My Lord. I know that it is going to sound cliche, but I never thought that this would really happen. I just posted on my cousin's blog over at Politickal Animal that I have always blown off my mother's accounts of Hurricanes Betsy & Camille as being exaggerations seen through the eyes of a teenager. I know now that they were not.

The neighborhood that I spent most of my childhood in is now destroyed. My grandparent's home where I shared so many wonderful memories and experiences may be no more as well. Luckily all of my family was smart enough to leave and get to safety before the roads became impassible from gridlock.

This event has really disrupted my psyche. I don't even think that I was affected like this when 9/11 happened. I just stare slack jawed at the images that are coming out of New Orleans. There are parts of the city that may never be reclaimed from the swamp in my lifetime, parts of the city will never recover. Martial law has been declaired, the I-10 twin spans are down. Wow. I never though that this would really happen.

I plan on volunteering with the red cross or whoever in the coming weeks. I'll never forgive myself if I don't. M’Mburugu had a machete in one hand but dropped that to thrust his fist down the leopard’s mouth. He gradually managed to pull out the animal’s tongue, leaving it dead.

“It let out a blood-curdling snarl that made the birds stop chirping,” he said. The leopard sank its teeth into the farmer’s wrist and mauled him with its claws. “A voice, which must have come from God, whispered to me to drop the panga (machete) and thrust my hand in its wide-open mouth. I obeyed,” M’Mburugu said.

As the leopard was dying, a neighbor heard the screams and arrived to finish it off with a machete. M’Mburugu was toasted as a hero in his village afterwards. He was also given free hospital treatment by astonished local authorities.

“This guy is very lucky to be alive,” a Kenya Wildlife Service official told Reuters, confirming the incident.

A touch of MENSA

Apparently this is an IQ test given to job applicants in Japan, read the instructions as the games in Japanese. I have actually heard of sweat shops in Malaysia full of 8 year olds being used to amass hundreds of "virtual weapons" for someone else's profit. It's a brave new world. Que Cera Cera.

From a trusted site:

"For the over 800,000 subscribers to Sony Online Entertainment's Everquest II game, life in a virtual world follows a familiar pattern: Take your character around massive landscapes, kill stuff, loot bodies for useful new items, use said items to improve your virtual character, repeat. Starting in late June, however, Sony will allow players to replace swords and other virtual booty by using their credit cards through the game's new Station Exchange service. The Exchange is an official intermediary for transactions between players: real-life cash for in-game items, characters, and currency—plus a small Sony service charge.

If you don't have time to spend hours playing the game, you can buy other players' items and currency to boost your character, or simply buy a preplayed powerful character to begin with. Sony estimates that the market for such virtual goods—typically sold on eBay-style auction sites or by game-playing corporate entities like IGE—has reached $200 million in yearly sales."

Slowly getting caught back up

Was it a wise man that once said, "too much vacation makes one crazy?" It's just so hard to get back into a rythm...

Anyway, Here's my top blogworthy things I should have blogged the last week or two:

Construction of Simulated Brain Begins
This is some crazy stuff. It was just right length wise, and Key West really impressed me. It's not a place to take in the beach as we were under the impression at all, but a place to go to experience. with the only living coral reef in North America, it is a place to go diving and snorkling. We decided on the latter, and went snorkling on sunday. WOW! That's all I can say. I've snorkled in clearer water, but the sealife was brimming with beauty. Schools of jellyfish, angel fish, barracuda, parrot fish, tarpon, snapper, yellowfin, sharks, coral, rock lobster - you name it and we saw it. Pictures to come when I get the film back.

Miss me?

Been taking a hiatus from the blogosphere for a few weeks now. Seems that athletes that wear red win more than any other color. Very intersting, especially since we just changed our soccer jerseys ove to red... hmmmmmm

Number 4 - I'm actually getting pretty amped about the next-gen video game platforms. Hearing great things about the new PS3, but it's price point is being speculated at $465 :/ start saving now. The new Xbox360 looks pretty impressive as well.

Number 3 - I'm so fricking tired, I just want to go to sleep 10 minutes ago.

Number 2 - This shitty new NeoNazi 'Sober.q' virus is driving me nuts. I am getting hundreds of hate mongering spam email in GERMAN of all things. Please STOP THE MADNESS!

and finally....

Patience young one! For the Jedi it is time to see ep3 too....

I CAN'T WAIT! I am a nervous wreck about seeing the new Star Wars movie tomorrow night. If you haven't heard anything about this - you need to be thrown into a trash compactor. This is the one that we have all been waiting for since 1983 folks. George has outdone himself. Ebert - 2 thumbs up. New York Times - 5 stars. I've got a proverbial Lightsaber in my pants to go see this one. Been geeking out for the last week. I even bought a special "Sith Happens" tshirt to wear tomorrow night. I'd go tonight, but couldn't get a ticket to the 12:01 show - see also #3.

BOI-OI-OI-NNNNNGGGGGG!

Going to New Orleans....

Wow, it's been a crazy week. Better yet, I keep telling MYSELF that I'm not that old :) One of the perks about this trip is that I finally get to check out my sister's new boyfriend. Rated PG-13, and earns ever minute of the rating. Sounds like a great story to me. But the guardians of our sensibilities seem unable to allow the tender among us to view life, even movie life, in really human terms.

Friends, this may come as a shock, but there really is something called 'evil' in the world, even as there is also something called 'good'. No matter how much the bleeding hearts try to pretend otherwise, both good and evil exist and have their influence felt in our lives and around the world.

So I applaud what George Lucas said here...

Lucas said he was getting 'a lot of flak' from parents concerned about the film's US rating. 'A lot of people saying how can you do this? My children love these movies. Why can you not let them go see it?' he said. 'But I have to tell a story. I'm not making these, oddly enough, to be giant, successful blockbusters. I'm making them because I'm telling a story, and I have to tell the story I intended.'

Real life is not always a pretty Disney-inspired theme park. Life can be wonderful, and it can be cruel. Star Wars is not about Barney, Sesame Street, or Sponge Bob. Lucas is a master story-teller, and as we all know it's the good ones (whose stories are most like real life) that we most want to hear.

posted by Politickal Animal at 8:40 AM 0 comments "

It's like, you know, work. What a weekend this last one was. Had our company retreat and the usual party that goes along with it, a much heralded softball game Saturday morning, in which the 4-0 ABPG Newshounds rallied in the bottom of the 7th to win. I was afforded a soccer game Sunday that saw a hat trick and a 7-0 victory as well. But most importantly it was our one year wedding anniversary.

I think that we have been through so much this last year. We have had one blow to the system after another. Family crisis, unemployment, uncertainty and we have emerged on top. I have to say, that without my wife it would have been nearly impossible to cope with the run of what we've had to endure. I was stuck in a heard of 12-14 cars going at least 15 miles below the speed limit. Once it broke up a little and I was able to make my way through to the front I noticed that the 2 cars that were holding everyone up both were KEBs.
